Lip balm What is it and how to make one at home

The main purpose of lip balm is to remove dry skin and prevent its formation, ensuring complete hydration of the areas where it is applied.

There are many products on the market aimed at protecting the skin of the lips. There are lip balms colored in different shades and enriched with different scents.

The benefits of using a good lip balm, however, do not end there: thanks to its slightly glossy texture that captures the light and its properties able to deeply moisturize the epidermis, lips will immediately look fleshier and more beautiful from the first application. In addition, the lip balm also helps to protect the skin from the sun’s rays, as it is enriched with sun filters.

Natural lip balm

To ensure a product that has real benefits for our skin while preserving its beauty and health, it is advisable to choose a natural shea butter lip balm. This premium butter is rich in vitamins and nutrients that will provide total protection and moisture for your skin. In addition, the effect of Shea butter lasts longer than that of other butters.

Another ingredient to look for in a natural lip balm is Centella Asiatica. This plant of oriental origin can have a considerable benefit if applied constantly to your lips. This is because it promotes skin elasticity by stimulating the production of natural collagen including the much hated wrinkles, making your lips look fleshier, fresher and younger.

Lip balm in the pharmacy

Among the lip balms in the pharmacy, there are some that are particularly good and can fully meet the need for protection.

Elizabeth Arden lip balm is one of the best lip balms you can find in the pharmacy. Its formula enriched with emollients, vitamin E and sunscreen moisturizes and smoothes the lips, which receive an antioxidant defense and a shield against harmful UVA and UVB rays. This balm is particularly suitable for chapped lips. It can be applied under lipstick for immediate protection.

Clinique Superbalm Lip Treatment is a deeply moisturizing balm that helps repair dry lips and restore moisture loss. It is rich in emollients and gives lips a velvety and smooth appearance.

Nuxe RĂªve de Miel lip balm is rich in ingredients that nourish and repair even the most damaged or dehydrated lips. It has a unique texture and fresh grapefruit taste. 79.5% of the product is made with natural, paraben-free ingredients.

DIY Lip Balm

It is also possible to create your own DIY lip balm by inserting the fragrances and oils that we like best. Here are some examples.

Vanilla Balm

  • 6 g of cocoa butter
  • 2 g shea butter
  • 2 g mimosa wax or candelilla wax
  • 0,5 ml Vitamin E (optional)
  • 3 drops of vanilla oleoresin

To create a vanilla DIY lip balm you need to melt the butters and the wax in a bain-marie. Then remove from the heat and add vitamin E and vanilla extract or essential oils. Pour the still fluid mixture into the chosen storage container.

Sweet orange balm

  • 2 teaspoons of cocoa butter
  • 2 teaspoons of shea butter
  • 3 drops of sweet orange essential oil
  • 1 drop of vitamin E (optional)

The procedure is almost the same. Pour the cocoa butter and shea butter into a saucepan and melt them in a bain-marie, stirring occasionally with a teaspoon to mix them well. Remove the saucepan from the heat and pour in the sweet orange essential oil and vitamin E. Stir and pour the liquid mixture into the chosen container.

Chocolate balm

  • 2 teaspoons of shea butter
  • 2 teaspoons of cocoa butter
  • 1 square of dark chocolate
  • 2 drops of natural vanilla flavour (optional)

For a tasty lip balm, you need to melt the two butters and the chocolate in a bain-marie. When the heat is off, add the natural vanilla aroma, if you like, and stir again. Pour mixture into the chosen container, let it set at room temperature and then transfer the cocoa butter to the refrigerator until it has solidified well.
